2018 Battle of Hastings anniversary

On 13th and 14th October 2018, Battle Twinning Association and Le Souvenir Normand joined together to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. In the 11th Century Monk’s Refectory at Battle Abbey, they organised exhibitions of the history and different activities in which the organisations are involved, together with display stands manned by members wearing traditional Norman and Saxon dress.
On Sunday 14th October, a church service was held in St Mary’s Church Battle to commemorate the anniversary of the battle. The service was conducted by Fr Christopher Channer, followed by a procession led by banners from both organisations to Battle Abbey where a commemoration ceremony was held at the Norman Stone. The Memorial Stone was inaugurated in 1903 by the three founding members of Le Souvenir Normand and lies close to the spot where Harold fell in combat. Alfie Saunters from Battle Abbey School played the bugle to sound the Last Post to remember the many who died during the battle in 1066. The service at the Norman Stone was conducted by the Reverend Canon Edward Bryant.

Le Souvenir Normand is a society formed for furthering friendship between people in France, Great Britain, Denmark, Canada, Norway and other countries, particularly where the Norman influence has been prominent. Recent meetings have included the annual Reunion in Rouen, Normandy and Stavanger, Norway. The 2019 Reunion will be hosted by the British Section in and around Norwich. Other activities include talks and visits to places with “Norman” connections such as Rochester Cathedral and Castle, Dover Castle, and Canterbury. Membership enquiries are welcomed from all those interested in Norman history and culture and further information can be found at www.souvenirnormand.com.
